There's a gloriously mental interview with Fred & Farid in this month's Archive.
For example, here is what they say about the music for their Orangina ad:
We tried thousands of tunes. We couldn't find the right one. We all went on a sex tourism trip to Tijuana to relax and we found this track in a social club.
I don't care what people say. Our industry needs more like Fred & Farid - they are showmen.
The magazine also publishes this new picture of the dynamic duo....

You may laugh. But they are rich, and don't even know who you are.
Previous Fred & Farid antics here and here.
Also in Archive, a new campaign for Howies, by Dye Holloway Murray.
I think it's absolutely mint.

I preferred the Hegarty interview, but I appreciate why you decided not to mention it.
Not that I want to open this subject up again, but here's what Sir Jonathan of Hegarty has to say about stealing/borrowing/being influenced:
"Right now there's this debate going on about Sony and the Rabbits – you know, "Oh it's taken from another idea," etc. Yeah, it probably was but if they've done it in a new and fresh way, then fantastic...Now we're not here to plagiarize. But, of course, we're influenced, and we're supposed to be. That's the purpose of being a creative individual."
I don't mind mentioning the Hegarty interview, I really enjoyed it. But please let's not open up the originality debate again. Or not for a while at least.
Did you like the howies ads?
Yeah. Brilliant. I'm just too old to use the word 'mint' ;-)
I sit opposite Lunar BBDO, and I like the Howies ads very much, there are more on Dye Holloway Murray’s website.
DHM Howies ads nice.
Red Brick Road to ruin Tesco Direct ad pants.
howies ads are mint indeed, taken up the nicely observed mantle that used to be tesco ads....which are now tired beyond belief and that latest tesco tv spot, oh dear.
Howies ads are fantastic.
I've done my own Howies-type ad.
You'll have to imagine an extreme close-up of my toilet parts (think three pounds of liver on a barber's shop floor).
The copy would read: piss-flap. 3432 not-so-careful users. Looks like it's gone 12 rounds with George Foreman and smells like one of his grills after a month cooking out-of-date mackerel. Attracts flies, but then kills them too. Abandon hope all ye who enter here.
"They are rich and don't even know who you are"
Like Dick Cheney.
belt loops ad made me laugh a lot and also reassess my time wasting activities, sure I lose 0.6 of a day on Scamp everyday.
Those Howies ads are excellent, but there's a new campaign for them by CDD out now (you can see it in Campaign' 'Private View').
Agree on Fred and Farid. Proper personalities are rare in this business these days (any business, in fact).
Hated that Orangina thing though.
I love the Howies ads.
But for me, their stuff is always let down by poor typography.
Probably in the minority here, but think these howies ads are a bit dull. Not that engaging to look and all look the same. The copy isn't really saying anything that exciting about jeans and feels a bit 'Innocent' and tesco. Boring.
CDD doesn't exist! SHOP does.
It's very tesco but for skateboarders??? who last time I checked aren't too big on copy or caring whether their jeans rip, in fact that's normal seems to be a bonus.
And the ads are by DHM, not Shop or CDD or whoever produces those wonderful Thorntons ads by the soon-to-be-huge Harmony Korine.
I agree with 2.56.
Surely the Howies ads should talk about all the really exciting parts of the jean manufacturing process?
A missed opportunity.
reek of ads written by guys who spend too long wearing suit jackets and have never seen a halfpipe.
I bloody love howies (their clothes and their philosophies) and their tone of voice is usually spot on. These ads (except for maybe the belt loop one) don't say anything about what howies really stand for as a company and are also rather badly written. Plus, the close-ups could be of any brand of jeans - I know it's meant to be about the details/materials but come on...
re 2.57
The Howies ads are V nice.
But I'm feeling sad today, I spilt some horlicks on my cum gutter last night. So I'm going to cheer myself up.
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced, but reliable anal bleaching clinic in the W1 area?
I think these Howies ads are excellent.
On an unrelated but very sad note, have you heard the news about Paul Arden?
mr kite - go and put your head in the oven.
Thats so sad about Paul Arden.
Some comment on Brand Republic, CR Blog and Lunar BBDO blog.
On my, Shallow Scamp. Paying more attention to F&F hype than to actual work (which is crap by the way).
Hope not too many junior teams take this advice seriously. We need more ideas people, not clowns.
Hang on haytaz...who said this was aimed at the skater kids? I buy Howies well-made stuff and I've never been near a half-pipe (although I do cycle to work). For better or worse, Howies stuff isn't cheap, so I'd have thought these well-written, well-art directed ads are aimed as much at me and my ilk as some refugee from Skins.
Probably well-written and well-art directed if on a placement. These ads look like they're been crafted in a hurry and someone's forgotten to put a good idea in there.
'...they're been crafted in a hurry?'
good job you didn't write them then eh
shut up losers.
I'm maybe old fashioned. But Fred and Farid and their shitting in the bin antics sound a bit like...now was the term my old man call them...oh yes, twats, that's it.
oops. typo.
mr kite is like the ford 'orchestra' to kate moss' honda 'cog'
As a denim freak, I think these are funny.
I don't know anything about Howie but I assume they make high quality denim but these ads, from the denim enthusiast pov, are spot on.
Do I get 10 points for clocking the Simpson's reference?
mr kite: is it you Juan?
david & phoebe (and ollie) did the Howies.
Get a grip Scamp you loser.
They are just a piss poor frog version of Gilbert and George.
Howies is my new brand of love
The problem for fred and farid is:
they don't know who you are but they don't know who they are either.
Wow! I am profound.
ps: Deeply sorry about Paul Arden.
More Arden stuff over on DHM's blog http://www.dyehollowaymurray.com/blogs/index.php
DHM Creatives: Hi Dave. We were going to spend a while on these but we fancied a couple of pints so we CRAFTED THEM IN A HURRY.
Dave Dye: Yeah, like Anon 4.59 says, they do look like that. Oh well. They're only for one of our coolest accounts. And it's not like I've got very high standards and am one of the two best art directors in the country. Fuck it. Let's hit the pub.
Did anyone else once LIKE those Thortons ads but now can't stand them because the twats who produced them can't stop banging on about them?
FUCK... Now I've written a post about it, I'll have to go and harm my self.
Please, please nobody reply to this post. Don't let those fuckers have the pleasure.
Way to many comments for me to read them all, so apologies if some smart arse has pointed this out already:
Re the Howies ads. Great use of copy. Proving that even in Scamp's Tuesday Tips the rules are there to be broken.
"If you have the choice, never write copy.
Why? Because no one reads it.
You’re just adding an extra element, which means fewer eyeballs will be attracted to the ad in the first place. So it’s counter-productive.
In the olden days, copy was important because it was a source of information about the product.
But nowadays, people almost never make a purchase without getting information from the internet first. Therefore, copy isn’t needed. Just put the web address. "
My tips aren't rules, they're just tips! Anyway, one of my two general principles why not to write copy (avoid clutter) has not been broken here, since the copy is not an extra element in this headline-free ad. (The visual is deliberately recessive, which also reduces clutter). As to whether these break my other principle (no one reads copy)... I have to admit I did read these. It's probably the first advertising copy I've read this year. That again is a tribute to the art direction, I feel.
Exactly. Brilliant Crafting. If you see them you can't not read them. How many ads can you say that about?
It's not copy. They're just really long headlines. Breaking that other rule Headlines ARE SHORT and that's it. Except all the long ones that win awards. Then they're OK.
Scamp - those KFC ads on bestads are fucking great.
Get them posted up - they deserve it.
(although the drumstick one's not quite at the level as the other two - I'm guessing baked beans would have worked well but aren't something KFC really want to push)
I saw loads of Howies stuff in TK Maxx, so it can't be selling very well.
You shop at TK MAX?
Loser.
I bet Juan doesn't have to shop at TK Max.
another 'hilarious' post from kite
whats TK Max?
re anon 12.31
TK Max is where poor people shop.
Kite's a douchebag.
And a douchbag from TK Max.
They don't come any cheaper than that.
These press ads are just swell!
howies: the backbone of skating
suck on my boomstick
The backbone of skating?
Explain!
The backbone.
Like a mainframe.
It supports all the other off shoots,
It's at the center of things,
like a spine.
Duh?
like the shopping list ad on DHM website as well.
anon 2.01pm:
bethlehem steel son.
@ Don Draper - that isn't even your real name, is it
The Howies...good lord, it's Leagas Delaney back from the dead!
Oh, of course, it's Dave Dye.
Juan Cabral might not shop in TK Max, but I've seen him in Mr Buyrite.
Does anyone else think that the cutsie little ad with the shaved sheep looks like he's left a trail of piss spots behind him?
@scamp- You sound just like my kid brother!
scamp 2.59pm: nor is pete campbell.
And I have seen a well known Director in Somerfield on the Northcote Road SW11.
Also seen Charly Inge comming out of Debenhams.
I also saw two creatives comming out of the loo together at BTAA.
'No more Juan posts for 40 days and 40 nights.'
How can we punish Scamp if he doesn't keep to his word?
I reckon there's more chance of seeing Frank Butcher in a Bob Monhouse Prostate Ad than him making it.
I once saw Ivan "l'oiseau" Bird coming out of Woolworth's in Balham. Then he crossed the road, without even waiting for the green man, using a very effective scampering technique.
Agree with Stan Lee - Scamp - this is GREAT copy!
For the last time, its not copy, it's just a really long headline!
Sorry
re: randall ridsdell "no hyphen" smythe @12.32
I saw a similar thing.
Paul Weiland crossing the Road near St Johns Wood tube station, just walked straight out into the road, nearly got hit by a car.
But he is partially sighted.
Lazy writing. With the presumption that if the good name of Dave Dye is attached to it along with the good reputation of Howies it will be a sure fire award winner.
Which it probably will be due to the aforementioned associations.
Could have done much better.
