Us advertising folks? We're somewhere in the middle. 
My own view is it's pointless comparing our salaries with those paid in other industries. We generate more wealth than doctors, but their job requires more training. We're smarter than footballers, but there are fewer people with great ball control than can write a decent ad.
But for your own happiness, it's important to feel you're being paid a fair wage in relation to your industry peer group. That's why - embarrassing as it is - I think it's well worth sharing salary information with a small group of trusted peers.
If you don't know what you should be earning, you could get screwed. Of course, you could still find yourself getting screwed even if you DO know what you should be earning. But at least you'll know about it.

Discussion point, not argument. How do we generate more wealth than doctors? Does it depend upon how much wealth we attribute to a saved human life?
Well, that's my point really. No valid comparison is possible. So let's not worry about who is earning more.
It's not doctors RNB. But I've done a few posts on how little we earn compared to other professionals who don't add any sort of value: lawyers, Wall Street (The City).
I mean there are plenty of 27 year old not-particularly-superstars at investment banks who earn twice what a Juan Cabral will make at the top of his career.
Sort of puts it all into perspective.

is advertising more valuable than medicine? uh, ooh, let me see..clearly not. but doctors and nurses get to work until they're 65. we don't.
and if you have children to put through college, as i do, that's a seriously big real problem. not a subject for theoretical philosphical musing.
rnb: we generate more wealth by driving the capitalist consumer engine. would have thought that was obvious. we have an outsized effect on society through the media. and way more stress to deal with than any so-called "doctor".
