What They Really Wear On The Today Programme

This is what happened when viral agency Rubber Republic were challenged by BBC Radio 4's Today programme to create a viral film for them, after one of their guys was interviewed on there. So far, it hasn't gone massively viral, but it's early days. I think it's quite funny.

P.S. Evan Davis wrote an interesting blog post on his experiences of advertising - apparently he finds us ad people "intimidatingly cool"(?!?!?), and also shares his thoughts on the film. But what do you think?

funny although she over-acted it a bit.

Lukewarm. No laugh-out-loud moments but no howlers either. I wouldn't send it to anyone though, unless they REALLY loved the Today programme. Even then I'd hesitate.

It's getting a bit slated in the YouTube comments, but then a video of Mother Teresa feeding a terminally-ill homeless kitten would get bitchy comments on YouTube.

Got as far as 43 secs. Does it get better?

couldn't they have got someone fitter?

She's a bit fat n ugly isn'y she?

If you try and rip-off 'The Office' you're always going to come off worse. Always.

I don't mean to be rude, but why on earth are supposed 'viral' specialists creating 'viral' films that are three and a half minutes long? I think Anonymous 1:09 is pretty much on the money - if you want people to spend three minutes watching your advert on-line, then it's either got to be INCREDIBLY good, have Will Ferrell in it, or be porn. This, a perfectly charming film with some nice gags in it, doesn't tick any of those boxes.

Aren't virals supposed to be short?

Christ that was long.

comment 5 and we have a 'rip off' claim.

the idea of make up and wardrobe for a radio show is great.

well done guys, funny stuff, not sure how 'viral' it'll be, but it would make a funny sitcom.

SCAMP = FAIL

Sweet Jesus that goes on a bit doesn't it? I mean a single gag s-t-r-e-c-t-c-h-e-d over 3+ minutes isn't working hard enough. Pay the writer (there WAS a writer wasn't there?) and the editor more (some?) money.

When Today interviewed the bloke from Rubber Republic he said that any successful viral has to reflect well on the person who sends it on. Anyone who I sent that to would be demanding 3 minutes of their life back from me.

C'mon Gout Legs - you're not as easily pleased as that normally....

i'd fuck her. thats all that matters really.

Nice. Would benefit from a slight trim.

3.31 - the comment policy is set out in the House Rules bit, top right hand corner of the blog. If you don't like it, other blogs are available.

Btw - Evan Davis is a bit harsh about Mother isn't he? "Old school'? Wonder what he'd have said if he'd visited one of those big sheds on the "Blue" side of Scamp's temperature table....

I suppose we should be grateful that the "wardrobe girl' didn't make some nudge nudge reference to Prince Albert.

Didn't do anything for me.

I got bored and flicked to the end to see if there was a funny twist. I didn't find one. Then again i'm in my early 20's so haven't yet realised there are stations other than radio 1. Shame on me.

Cringed the whole way through. I think this is a great concept, but poorly executed.

GOUT-LEGS said...

sorry Rocker,

i meant to say "this is wank covered in wank being wanked off by a wanker..."

but honestly i like the joke. it is 2:45 seconds too long, that's why i don't think it will have a viral effect, but it is a nice idea.

What, funny in a vinegar dipped cocktail stick down the japs eye kinda way?

So bad that even the word verification for this comment was 'pispor'

Nice idea but I doubt it will go viral. Wrong target audience - if you care about the Today Programme you're not going to be an avid sharer of video content.

i imagine the level of humour is perfect for a radio 4 listener. i found it quite funny, and i expect the majority of radio 4 listeners would find it even funnier!

Tough crowd.

I thought it was very funny and not long at all but then again I'm far brighter than all you miserable pea-brained dolts who are bitching about it.

are comments from posters at 3.43 and 3.45 related?

Anything with John the legend in it I will watch, but I'd pass it one to maybe my Mum and that's it. I don't think it appeals to anyone besides the hardcore today program crowd, so it was OK for them, but not what I would deem "viral" material. It felt more like a bit of silliness for Red nose Day or something.

And I agree that a 3 min long viral is asking for some more time in the edit suite (Perhaps the account guy should have been invited in, Scamp?). The only viral I can remember being good that was longer than 3 minutes was about 1.5 hours long and was a full length motion picture by Red Bull just for the web.

A mate of mine works as a medical copywriter for one of the big pharmasutical companies. When I first told him about viral ads he wondered what all the fuss was about as he'd been making virus related adverts for about ten years.
He began to understand the difference between his job as a copywriter for a medical company and that of a copywriter for a cool advertising agency when I explained that his ads helped to save people's lives.

she's almost quite saucy. One cup size bigger and she'd definitely get it.

The film is too long.

Interesting comments. My guess is the people who found Buono Guidi's film funny wouldn't like this and vice versa. Maybe it's an age/culture thingy? Personally, I found it funny but I am 67 with a double first in Greek and Arhurian Legends and I abhor bad language.

Hmmm, dunno Anon 12:44, I liked both in different ways. in the same way I like Fawlty Towers and Peep Show.

Hate to bang the same drum again, but this isn't particularly inspiring now is it?

Would you pass this on? Doubt it. Maybe it's not meant for me though.

Anon 12:44 P - A double first in Greek and Arhurian Legends? That's mightily impressive, but hardly relevant to this discussion.
